The UK changes on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October, at the same moment as the rest of Europe. British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1) runs between the two dates, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0) the rest of the year. The US changes on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.
London to US time difference around the clock change
For a few weeks each year the US is on daylight saving time while the UK is not, so London is one hour closer to the US than usual. This is when meetings, flights and trading hours get mixed up.
| London vs | Most of the year | During the gap weeks |
|---|---|---|
| New York, Miami (Eastern) | 5 hours behind | 4 hours behind |
| Chicago, Dallas (Central) | 6 hours behind | 5 hours behind |
| Denver (Mountain) | 7 hours behind | 6 hours behind |
| Los Angeles, Seattle (Pacific) | 8 hours behind | 7 hours behind |
| Year | Spring gap (US already on summer time) | Autumn gap (UK back on GMT, US not yet) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 8 Mar to 28 Mar | 25 Oct to 31 Oct |
| 2027 | 14 Mar to 27 Mar | 31 Oct to 6 Nov |
| 2028 | 12 Mar to 25 Mar | 29 Oct to 4 Nov |
Example for 2026: a 3 pm call in London is 10 am in New York most of the year, but 11 am in New York from 25 to 31 October. Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii never change their clocks, so their gap to London changes by an hour when the UK changes, not when the rest of the US does.
Clock changes in other countries
Ireland and all EU countries change at the same moment as the UK (01:00 UTC on the last Sunday in March and October), so the UK stays 1 hour behind Paris and Berlin all year. Most of Canada follows the US dates. Mexico stopped changing its clocks in 2022, apart from some areas near the US border. In the southern hemisphere it works the other way round: New Zealand goes forward on the last Sunday in September and back on the first Sunday in April, and New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia go forward on the first Sunday in October and back on the first Sunday in April. Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia do not change. The EU voted in 2019 to stop the clock change, but member states never agreed on a date, so the twice-yearly change continues.
Night shifts and the clock change
A shift from 10 pm Saturday to 6 am Sunday is 9 hours when the clocks go back and 7 hours when they go forward, even though the clock shows 8. If you fill in a timesheet, write down the hours you actually worked, not just start and end times. Add up your week with the work hours calculator, turn the result into decimal hours with the decimal hours converter, and check the extra hour against your weekly limit with the overtime calculator. The week number calculator shows which week the change falls in.
