How Shared Parental Pay is worked out (2026/27)

Weeks to share = 39 − weeks of maternity pay used. Each week: £194.32 or 90% of average weekly earnings, whichever is lower.

Leave to share = 52 − weeks of maternity leave used. Average weekly earnings come from the 8 weeks of pay before the end of the qualifying week. You need at least £129 a week. Anyone earning more than £215.91 a week gets the flat rate.

Example

The mother takes 12 weeks of maternity pay, which leaves 27 weeks of shared pay and 40 weeks of shared leave. Her partner earns £2,600 a month (£600 a week) and takes 10 weeks: 90% would be £540, so they get the flat rate, £1,943.20 before tax. The mother can take the other 17 weeks of shared pay herself.

FAQ

How much is Shared Parental Pay in 2026?
From 6 April 2026, Statutory Shared Parental Pay is £194.32 a week or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. Unlike maternity pay, there is no 6-week period at 90% of full pay.
How many weeks of Shared Parental Pay can we get?
Up to 37 weeks between you. It is the 39 weeks of maternity pay (or Maternity Allowance) minus the weeks the mother has already used. If she takes 22 weeks, you can share 17 weeks of pay and 30 weeks of leave.
Who can get Shared Parental Pay?
The parent claiming it needs 26 weeks with the same employer by the end of the 15th week before the due week, must still work there the week before the leave starts, and must earn at least £129 a week on average. The other parent must have worked in 26 of the 66 weeks before the due week and earned at least £390 in 13 of those weeks.
How much maternity leave must the mother take first?
At least the 2 weeks of compulsory maternity leave right after the birth (4 weeks for factory workers). She then ends her maternity leave and pay early, and the weeks left over become shared leave and pay.
Can we both be on shared parental leave at the same time?
Yes. You can take the leave together or one after the other, in one block or in up to three separate blocks each, as long as it all ends within 52 weeks of the birth.
How much notice do I need to give?
At least 8 weeks before each block of leave. You also tell your employer how much leave you are entitled to and how you plan to split it with your partner.
When do we have to tell our employers?
Each parent gives their own employer at least 8 weeks of notice before their first block: a notice of entitlement (how much leave and pay you can share and how you plan to split it) and a booking notice for the dates. The mother also gives a curtailment notice to end her maternity leave early. If the partner wants to start right after the 2 compulsory weeks, that means telling the employer about 6 weeks before the due date. The table above shows that date for each due date.
How much is Shared Parental Pay on a £30,000 salary?
About £577 a week before tax, so 90% would be £519. That is more than the flat rate, so you get £194.32 a week. Over 10 weeks that is £1,943.20, about £3,826 less than your normal pay unless your employer pays enhanced shared parental pay. Anyone earning more than about £11,230 a year gets the same flat rate.
Is Shared Parental Pay taxed?
Yes. It is paid through payroll, so income tax, National Insurance and pension contributions come off. Some employers pay enhanced shared parental pay; check your contract.
Can I still take paternity leave as well?
Yes. Paternity leave and pay (up to 2 weeks) is separate from shared parental leave and can be taken before or after it.
